DESOTO COUNTY — A delegation from DeSoto County is going to Washington, D.C., to battle a feared ozone ranking.
The Commercial Appeal reports the delegation includes local county government and economic development officials.
The county is faced with a Feb. 29 deadline to object to the Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to list the county as “nonattainment” on ozone levels.
The DeSoto County group will meet in early February with Mississippi’s congressional delegation and EPA staff. Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is also helping the county.
Non-attainment can affect industrial recruitment by requiring prospective firms with emissions as part of their production process to spend more for heightened controls. It also adds a new level of approvals and regulatory oversight required for federally funded transportation projects, officials said.
