Leaders meet to discuss post-Delta service at Mid-Delta Regional

GREENVILLE — Forty area-wide civic and business leaders met Jan. 30 at the Mid-Delta Regional Airport to discuss the future of commercial air service in Greenville post-Delta Airlines.

The airport recently received two more service bids, bringing the total number of airlines interested in Mid-Delta Regional to four.

Airport director Lane Rodgers was at the meeting to walk through the details of the process and explain the each proposal.

Delta Airlines, which currently offers two flights daily in and out of Greenville, has announced it is discontinuing service. It is declared “Essential Air Service” by the U.S. Department of Transportation because it services a community that is more than 90 miles from an airport hub.

The Department of Transportation will make the decision on which airline will be chosen, but weighs community input. The information gathered at the Jan. 30 meeting will be presented by the Airport Committee at an upcoming council meeting.
