Storm heavily damages historic structure; future uncertain

CORINTH — Part of a historic Corinth building that preservationists have been working to save was badly damaged by a storm.

Much of the old Corinth Machinery building collapsed early Saturday after a storm moved through Corinth. New fencing was put up to keep people from getting too close to a building.

Co-owner Terry Albright said it appears that a single beam is holding the building’s front wall in place, while a large metal spiral staircase and its concrete support appear to be preventing the collapse of another area of the building. The Daily Corinthian reports that the damage raises questions about the building’s future.

Completed in 1869, the structure has been regarded as the state’s oldest existing industrial building and a symbol of the Reconstruction period.
