HATTIESBURG — Epic, an integrated electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management system, has gone live across Hattiesburg Clinic’s network of locations and providers, changing the technology of the practice.
Since then, patients who have visited Hattiesburg Clinic have experienced a different kind of appointment where they have left the office more informed and with increased access to their health information.
“With Epic, our patients receive an after-visit summary of their doctor’s visit that explains exactly what was discussed during their time at the doctor’s office including a diagnosis and directions for prescriptions and follow-up care,” Ed Curtis, assistant COO, says. “Before patients step out of the exam room, their prescriptions are sent to the pharmacy of their choice, which minimizes the time they have to wait for their medications.”
Additionally patients are given the option to sign up for a secure online patient portal, “Iris,” which allows them to see a portion of their health record at any time.
The move from the clinic’s previous EMR to Epic was not taken lightly; seven vendors were reviewed before the Wisconsin-based company was selected.
“In August 2009, we recognized that we had outgrown our current EMR,” Curtis said. “After nine months, thousands of miles travel across the country speaking with EMR vendors and viewing their products, the EMR Search Task Force selected Epic to provide our doctors and patients even greater state-of-the-art resources and care with all the ‘smart’ capabilities of the Epic system.”
While the focus of the clinic was patient care, Hattiesburg Clinic was projected to resume 100 percent of its regularly schedule appointments at the three-month mark following the go-live date, according to Epic. The clinic exceeded the projections and resumed between 95 and 100 percent of its patient flow in a six-week time frame.
