Gulf Coast Research Lab honors McIlwain

The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory has honored former longtime marine fisheries scientist Tom McIlwain with an endowed chair in the Department of Coastal Sciences. Officials say McIlwain was a key figure in fisheries management.
A native of Pascagoula, McIlwain earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Southern Mississippi. His doctorate was in zoology, computer science and statistics. He spent most of his working career at the research laboratory, including a 1989-94 tenure as its director.
His only nine-year break was for work with the National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory in Pascagoula. He returned to the GCRL in 2003 to coordinate the expansion of facilities for the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center at the Cedar Point campus, a 224-acre site located on Davis Bayou in Ocean Springs.
