PEARL RIVER COUNTY — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has asked Pearl River County for a comprehensive waste disposal plan.
The Picayune Item reports county officials are unhappy about spending the money but can do nothing about it. Such plans are required by state law every 10 years.
County Administrator Adrain Lumpkin Jr. told supervisors other counties throughout the state are receiving similar demands.
Lumpkin says the plan, which will be lengthy and detailed, could cost between $30,000 and $40,000 to compile.
Board of Supervisors president J. Patrick Lee said the county is fortunate that it has Central Landfill at Millard, where local rural residents are allowed to deliver a prescribed monthly quota of household garbage free of charge.
Although the Millard Landfill is a private concern, the county contracts with it for the local free delivery.
The landfill is owned by Waste Management. The company also pays the county a monthly fee based on how much garbage is disposed of at the landfill.
In addition, there are a number of private companies that collect garbage throughout the county from homeowners and others who pay the private companies a collection fee.
Officials said the private garbage collectors and the presence of the landfill is believed to give the county an edge on garbage collection and disposal that costs other counties and taxpayers a lot of money.
The cities of Picayune and Poplarville contract with privately owned firms for garbage collection and disposal.
