GAUTIER — The Gautier City Council has approved a resolution asking for legislative authority to hold a referendum on a 1 percent tax on restaurant and bar sales to fund recreation, economic development and tourism promotion.
The Mississippi Press reports the vote without comment at yesterday’s council meeting is for a “local and private bill” in the Legislature. If approved, the referendum would be on the May 2013 municipal ballot.
City manager Samantha Abell says the 1 percent sales tax is projected to produce $164,500 in revenue, which would be added to the current parks and recreation budget of $164,000.
Abell said 80 percent of the current parks and recreation budget is for salaries and maintenance.
