MDOT: Stay off U.S. 90 due to blowing sand, treacherous driving conditions

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — The Mississippi Department of Transportation is asking motorists to stay off U.S. 90 while crews are out removing sand that has accumulated on the coastal highway.

MDOT says crews are removing sand between the Bay St. Louis Bridge and the Biloxi Bay Bridge today.

The work began yesterday after heavy winds blew sand onto U.S. 90, creating treacherous driving conditions.

With the large amount of sand on the roadway in Harrison County, MDOT says motorists can expect a number of intermittent lane closures for many days to come.

Pass Christian police chief John Dubuisson says many areas of his town are down to just one lane.

Other areas are also reporting traffic is down to one lane.
