NPS closing section of Natchez Trace due to 'major safety hazard'

CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI — An eight-mile section of the Natchez Trace could be closed for a year.

WAPT-TV reports a major safety hazard will lead to the closure near milepost 94.8 between Ridgeland and Clinton. The National Park Service says the closure will begin today between Interstate 55 and U.S 49.

Engineers say there’s the potential for collapse of the roadway because of instability in the embankment. Over the past year, several emergency repairs have been completed, but the section has continued to deteriorate.

During the closure, southbound traffic will exit at I-55 South to Interstate 220 to U.S. 49 North, where traffic may re-enter the parkway. Northbound traffic will exit the parkway at U.S. 49 South to I-220 North to I- 55 North, where motorists can re-enter.

    TOO SLOW!!!!!!! It is ridiculous that it will take a year to repair 8 miles of road. Not only is our government corrupt, it is lazy too. How sad. I miss Texas.
