Runoff required in mayorial race; incumbent finishes fourth

ABERDEEN — There will be a runoff in two weeks to decide who will be Aberdeen’s next mayor.

In complete but unofficial returns from yesterday’s Democratic Party primary, former mayor Cecil Belle and Maurice Howard lead the six-candidate field that included incumbent Mayor Jim Ballard. Ballard finished fourth in the balloting.

The runoff election is April 17.

Police Chief Henry Randle III won re-election, defeating Quinell Shumpert in the Democratic primary.

The winners of the Democratic primary will take office since there aren’t any Republicans or independents running.
