All county employees to be furloughed in cost-cutting measure

PEARL RIVER COUNTY — New furloughs in Pearl River County will affect all county employees, including department heads and administrators.

The Picayune Item reports the board of supervisors also cut spending, including $50,000 to the library system was free up money in the budget.

On June 11, the board of supervisors froze hiring and the issuance of purchase orders.

The furloughs call for all employees to take off one unpaid day every two-week pay period. The furloughs will not apply to the sheriff’s road deputies or dispatchers.

In addition to the furloughs, supervisors made cuts totaling $78,600 to organizations receiving county funding, including the library.

Officials say the move will save $276,000. Officials have said they need to cut $500,000.
