Attorney General warns of e-mail scam involving U.S. Postal Service

JACKSON — Attorney General Jim Hood is warning Mississippians of a bogus email scam targeting postal customers.

The emails claim to be from the U.S. Postal Service and falsely tell the receiver about an attempted or intercepted package delivery. Some mention unpaid delivery fees. The scam email encourages you to click on a link or open an attachment, but Postal Inspectors and the Attorney General warn that doing so will install a virus on your computer.

“This virus can actually steal personal information off your computer,” said Attorney General Hood. “Information such as your user name, password and bank account information.”

If you receive such an email, the experts recommend that your best course of action is to delete the message. The USPS is working to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program. If you have questions about a delivery or wish to report spam, please call 1-800-ASK-USPS or email spam@uspis.gov.

If you think you may have fallen victim to the scam, contact the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit at 601-576-4281.
