Special judge appointed to hear mayor's bus-passing case

SOUTHAVEN — A special judge has been named in Southaven Mayor Greg Davis’ misdemeanor traffic case, but no prosecutor or court date have been set.

DeSoto County Justice Court Clerk Shirley Beshears tells The Commercial Appeal Tallahatchie County Justice Court Judge Steve Ross has been appointed to hear the case.

A special judge and prosecutor are being appointed because all five DeSoto County Justice Court judges and Justice Court Judge Billy Lantrip recused themselves since they all know Davis.

On May 2, Davis pleaded not guilty to the charges during a brief Justice Court appearance with his attorney, Steve Farese.

Davis is charged with overtaking a school bus and illegal use of blue and red lights on his private vehicle, both misdemeanor offenses.
