DuPree will seek reelection to fourth term in Hub City

HATTIESBURG — Democrat Johnny DuPree says he will seek a fourth term as Hattiesburg mayor in 2013.

The Hattiesburg American reports DuPree revealed his intentions this week — first during a fundraiser Tuesday night, then in an interview with the newspaper Wednesday.

DuPree made history in August 2011 when he became the first black candidate to win a major-party nomination for Mississippi governor. He lost the November general election to Republican Phil Bryant.

Candidates have until next March to qualify for the Hattiesburg mayor’s race.

A current City Council member, Deborah Denard Delgado, says she plans to run for mayor as a Democrat.

The newspaper reports Dave Ware, a Republican on the City Council, is another possible mayoral candidate, although he has been vague about his plans.
