Sanderson Farms building plant in North Carolina

LAUREL — A Mississippi poultry processor has selected a site in Nash County, N.C., for a new chicken plant.

Sanderson Farms says no decision has been made on when to start work on the plant near Interstate 95 and N.C. 97 southwest of Rocky Mount, N.C.

Chairman and CEO Joe F. Sanderson Jr. says the company plans to hire 1,100 employees for the plant when it is constructed.

Sanderson says the company has purchased land on N.C. 97 to serve as a hatchery and has options to buy property for a wastewater treatment plant. Nash County owns the 142-acre tract that would be used for the processing plant.

The city of Wilson, N.C., has been fighting to halt the plant, saying the construction of chicken houses near the plant could jeopardize the environment.
