Mayor vetoes budget adopted by City Council

GULFPORT — Mayor George Schloegel has vetoed the 2012-2013 budget adopted by the Gulfport City Council last week.

Schloegel urged the council yesterday to take another look at “right sizing” the city staff and cutting expenses.

Council president Ricky Dombrowski told The Sun Herald a small group of council members would meet to consider the mayor’s proposals.

Neither the mayor’s or council’s budgets propose any tax increase, employee furloughs or hikes in water, sewer or garbage rates.

Schloegel proposes cutting staff and closing a fire station while the council wants to keep the station open and reduce employees only through attrition.
