JACKSON COUNTY — A state regulatory panel wants to know why a distribution system in a south Mississippi community is losing large amounts of natural gas.
The Sun Herald reports the Moss Point/Escatawpa Gas Distribution System is unable to account for 42 percent of its natural gas, resulting in $2.8 million in lost revenue last year.
The problem was discussed last Friday at a hearing at the Jackson County Courthouse.
The Public Service Commission and Moss Point officials say the losses could be a result of leakage, meter errors, accounting or theft.
The commission could shut off the city’s gas system if the problem isn’t fixed.
Moss Point has repaired more than 1,000 leaks in the system since 2010, but the problem persists.
