Work underway on transit complex, treatment plant

NATCHEZ — Work is underway at the site of the future Natchez transit facility.

The Natchez Democrat reports crews with Paul Jackson Construction of Brookhaven are removing a fence, concrete slab and shed from the site, formerly the location of A-B Motor Company.

The crews also have 7,000 yards of dirt that has to be removed from the site.

The transit facility, its equipment, as well as two recently purchased trolleys, commuter bus and two other passenger vehicles, are being funded by a $3 million federal stimulus package through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is providing $900,000 in MDOT Formula Grants For Other than Urbanized Areas program, funds to help pay for approximately $1 million in unforeseen costs for the facility.

In a separate item, Natchez is making $1 million in improvements to the city’s wastewater treatment plant in an effort to save money in the long run.

City engineer and Natchez Water Works superintendent David Gardner tells the Natchez Democrat the city is replacing the large fans in the plant’s concrete aeration basins.

Gardner said the fans are energy hogs and will be replaced by tubes that will aerate the waste but use less energy.

He says the tubes will inject fine oxygen bubbles into the waste material to promote the growth of bacteria that will eat away at the solid waste.

With the replacement of the aeration fans, Gardner says the city is hoping to save approximately 30 percent on energy costs for the plant.
