Byington moves to Capitol

After 42 years with the Clinton Police Department, chief Don Byington is leaving to take another full-time law enforcement job as head of the Mississippi Capitol Police.

Byington will retire from the city of Clinton Dec. 31 and the next day will become administrative director of the Capitol Police, a force that’s a little larger than the 50-employee Clinton Police Department. The Capitol Police is charged with security for state office buildings and the Mississippi Capitol.

Byington tells the Clarion-Ledger he had contemplated retiring in June, at the end of Mayor Rosemary Aultman’s tenure as a five-term mayor. He joined the Clinton force in 1970 as a patrolman.
