County petitioning FEMA to enter 'buyout' program

PICAYUNE — Pearl River County officials say about 25 properties could be eligible for a “buyout” program to help some flood-prone residents.

County planner Ed Pinero Jr. tells the Picayune Item about six property owners so far have said they want to participate in the program. The Federal Emergency Management Agency would have to approve the county’s participation.

The board of supervisors this week approved sending a letter to the FEMA asking to join the program to buyout flood prone properties in the county.

Interest in the program surfaced following extensive flooding and heavy rainfall from Hurricane Isaac in August.

Official say in a three-day period, 24 inches of rain fell in Pearl River County.

Pinero says the properties could not be resold and would revert to natural space.
