Mayor pushing to establish medical corridor in city

MERIDIAN — Mayor Cheri Barry says plans are being made to establish a medical corridor in the east Mississippi city.

Barry tells WTOK-TV in Meridian the project is in the early stages.

The city of Jackson has a similar project in the works.

State law passed in 2012 will create medical zones across the state anchored by facilities with more than 375 hospital beds. By establishing a five-mile radius around those facilities, officials hope to attract businesses within the medical industry. Those businesses would be required to make investments and create at least 25 new full time jobs.

Then they’d be eligible for tax breaks and state assistance for infrastructure. The law also allows any three aligning counties to create their own medical zone.
