MDEQ fines International Paper, Timber Products plants

REDWOOD and CORINTH — International Paper Co. is paying a $38,250 civil fine for failing to label used oil tanks and exceeding air pollution limits from a lime kiln.

The company, based in Memphis, Tenn., agreed in September to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

An order published by the department says the company emitted too much hazardous metals dust from its lime kiln during a January 2011 test. The company exceeded its allowed emissions by 7.4 percent then. A December 2011 test showed emissions below permitted limits.

It also says the mill just north of Vicksburg failed to label three oil containers as required. The department found the violations in May and August 2012 inspections.

In a separate item, Timber Products Co. has paid a $47,000 civil fine for failing to conduct required environmental tests.

The company, based in Springfield, Ore., agreed in October to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

An order published by the department says the company failed to test for emissions from a saw and a sander for at least four years after being issued air pollution permits in 2007.

The 50-employee mill also failed to maintain records of equipment inspections and stormwater inspections and was late in applying to renew its permit.

Of the fine, $3,000 will go back to the company so it can develop an environmental management system.
