SOUTHAVEN — Mayor Greg Davis’ civil trial in Jackson has been continued until May, but there are discussions that the judge in the case has urged both sides to settle the matter before then.
At the end of yesterday’s hearing, The Commercial Appeal reports a Hinds County chancellor called attorneys for both sides into his chambers for a closed-door meeting.
The case centers around Auditor Stacey Pickering’s efforts to recover more than $70,000 the state says the mayor still owes for unsubstantiated personal expenses.
In November 2011, Pickering said Davis defrauded the public in accumulating the expenses totaling more than $170,000, and ordered him to repay the money. Davis repaid $96,000 through supporters, but denies he owes the remaining $70,000-plus.
