Entergy issues statement about Superdome outage

Entergy has issued a statement regarding last night’s Super Bowl power outage:

“Shortly after the beginning of the second half of the Super Bowl in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, a piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load sensed an abnormality in the system.  Once the issue was detected, the sensing equipment operated as designed and opened a breaker, causing power to be partially cut to the Superdome in order to isolate the issue.”

The championship game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers was suspended for 34 minutes. Aerial coverage showed a blackout that appeared to permeate the 72,000 seat Superdome and surrounding block.

The statement goes on to say that backup generators in the Superdome were started and power was later restored to full capacity.

SI.com reported that the outage stopped escalators, credit-card machines, and darkened concourses.

AT&T representatives contacted during the game said their wireless network was on another commercial power feed and not affected.
