City asks court to toss redistricting lawsuit

HATTIESBURG — The city of Hattiesburg is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit by a group that says the city’s redistricting plan dilutes black voting strength.

The U.S. District Court lawsuit asks for a court injunction against the use of the plan in municipal elections.

The city’s response denies that allegation, saying that the city admits a history of racially polarized voting but denies that it continues today.

The Hattiesburg American reports that the City Council voted July 3 to adopt the plan, which later received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice.
