TUPELO — The Tupelo City Council is set to consider tighter controls on nightclubs in hopes of reducing repeated disturbances that have kept police busy.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the ordinance will be considered tomorrow. It would apply to all nightclubs — broadly defined as any establishment that serves alcoholic beverages and provides entertainment, such as music, games, performances and dancing. It will require a permitting process for a state or city license to sell alcohol.
The nightclub ordinance was drafted using models from other cities. It’s in response to police having to respond repeatedly to disturbances at nightclubs, as well as a deadly New Year’s Day shooting.
