Hospital returns to normal after main/backup power failure

GULFPORT — A contractor working at Memorial Hospital cut the main power line to the facility, resulting in a power outage yesterday at approximately 7:58 a.m., according to a release from the hospital.

At that time, a main circuit breaker was damaged, which delayed the activation of the hospital’s standby generator power. By 9:10 a.m., emergency power was restored throughout the hospital.

Yesterday’s news release said: “All precautions were taken to protect our patients and to continue patient care. First responders and area hospitals were cooperating within minutes. Although no patients required transportation outside the hospital, other area medical facilities were on standby to receive patients if necessary.

Surgeries and procedures are in the process of being rescheduled. Outpatient diagnostic tests are being re-routed to our outlying clinics.”
