Popular Jackson restaurant owner dies at 64

JACKSON — Hal White, a partner with his brother Malcolm in the popular downtown Jackson eatery and blues club Hal & Mal’s, has died. He was 64.

Malcolm White announced his brother’s death yesterday on his Facebook page.

Hal White had been in intensive care at St. Dominic Hospital since suffering an aneurysm in his brain Saturday. The Mass of Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church in Jackson.

Hal and Malcolm White opened the restaurant nearly 30 years ago in a converted warehouse.

While Malcolm White was the front man, Hal White settled in to running the restaurant where he became renowned for his gumbo, bisque and daily soups.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; three children and a granddaughter.
