Another blow? State could see more severe weather

BIEjnFrCIAEbuz-.png-largeIt has been a stormy start to the year here in Mississippi, and that trend looks to continue tomorrow.

In fact, we could see our stormiest day yet.

A massive storm front is now pushing its way through parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, and has the Magnolia State in its sites. Currently, the National Weather Service in Jackson has the storms passing through Mississippi late Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

The entire state, except for extreme North Mississippi and the Gulf Coast, is in the “hazard area,” with the possibility for “widespread” damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and hail.

In its outlook, NWS Jackson says: “Severe storms capable of producing widespread damaging winds are expected generally along and northwest of the Natchez Trace as a strong cold front moves across the area… A few tornadoes and hail will be possible as this system passes. A strong pressure gradient will also produce windy and gusty conditions… Expect sustained winds from the south of 20 to 30 mph with occasional to frequent gusts ranging from 35 to 45 miles per hour.

“The activation of storm spotters, ham radio operators and emergency personnel in support of severe weather operations will be needed…”

The storms are expected to intensify this afternoon and evening, with Oklahoma City, Okla., getting a Weather Channel TOR CON rating of five, meaning there is a 50 percent chance a tornado will form within 50 miles of the city.

The bottom line is tomorrow Mississippians need to hold on to their hats — and keep an eye to the sky.
