MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — Gov. Phil Bryant has pushed back the date of a special election to fill a House seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Jessica Upshaw.
Bryant yesterday changed the District 95 election to May 28. If a runoff is necessary, it’ll be June 18.
Candidates’ new qualifying deadline is April 29.
Everything is two weeks later than the dates Bryant originally announced Wednesday.
District 95 covers parts of Harrison and Hancock counties.
Bryant’s office said the dates were changed because of concern over confusion with municipal elections, which are scheduled for the original runoff date.
Upshaw was a Republican from Diamondhead, first elected in November 2003. She was found dead March 24. Authorities say she appears to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
