Coast city gets more time to pay back $1.4M

D’IBERVILLE — The $3 million BP grant awarded to D’Iberville for Ocean Expo aquarium is still under review, giving the city an additional 90 days to repay $1.4 million in disputed expenses.

The Sun Herald reports the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has extended the stop-work order while the agency continues to review documents. The action freezes all deadlines for 90 days.

On March 18, MDEQ gave D’Iberville 30 days to repay $1.4 million of the BP grant administered by the agency. At the same time, MDEQ questioned $945,000 in additional payments not backed by proper documentation and gave D’Iberville the opportunity to provide the documents and appeal the ruling.

Acting city manager Sharron Perkins said the city is actively working on providing the information requested by MDEQ.
