Company to expand pipe plant; investment could reach $50M

HERNANDO — A German pipe maker is expanding in North Mississippi, announcing it will spend $30 million to $50 million on a pipe finishing facility in Hernando and create 70 new jobs.

Schulz Xtruded Products is the Mississippi division of Wilh. Schulz GMBH, based in Krefeld, Germany. SXP has a plant in Tunica County that manufactures stainless-steel pipes for the oil and gas industry.

The company said operations in Hernando are expected to begin in two to three weeks in the new facility that SXP built quietly over the last three months.

Mayor Chip Johnson tells The Commercial Appeal the city and SXP had been working on the project for nine months.

Company officials say the demand for corrosion-resistant pipes prompted their decision to locate in DeSoto County.
