Delta city wants state's permission to donate cottages

GREENWOOD — Officials have asked Gov. Phil Bryant to allow lawmakers consider during tomorrow’s special session a local bill to allow the city of Greenwood to donate small homes to a nonprofit organization for low-income housing.

Similar legislation died during the 2013 regular session.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports the city has 26 Katrina cottages, small homes used to provide housing on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency gave the cottages to the city in 2011.

A portion of the homes were intended to be used in the city’s Baptist Town revitalization effort. Under state law, the city can’t give the cottages directly to private citizens.

The legislation would allow the city to donate the cottages to an unnamed nonprofit.
