MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — Gov. Phil Bryant has set a special election to fill a House seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Jessica Upshaw.
The election is May 14 in District 95, covering parts of Harrison and Hancock counties. A runoff, if necessary, will be June 4.
The qualifying deadline is April 15, and candidates run without party labels in special elections.
Upshaw was a Republican from Diamondhead. She was first elected in November 2003.
She was found dead March 24 at the Mendenhall home of former state Rep. Clint Rotenberry. Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis says Upshaw had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
