Disbarred lawyer asks to return to prison pending appeal

OXFORD — Disbarred Mississippi attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs wants to return to federal prison pending an appeal of a judicial corruption conviction.

Scruggs has been free on $2 million bond since December while appealing the 2009 conviction, but a three-judge panel from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently rejected his arguments.

In a court filing Friday, Scruggs’ lawyer said he may ask for a rehearing or petition the U.S. Supreme Court.

The motion said Scruggs understands “such reviews are discretionary” and wants to resume his sentence.

Scruggs was in prison from another corruption case when he was sentenced to seven years in February 2009 for honest services fraud for allegedly influencing former Hinds County Judge Bobby DeLaughter.

Scruggs asked to report to a prison in Montgomery, Ala., by April 29.

  1. Did not realize Dickie was in prison in Montgomery.

  2. Dickie really wants to go to the bar at the country club. He broke the law, but thinks he is above the law.
