EAST MISSISSIPPI — Karl Gibbs will be filling the remaining three years of the House District 36 seat for his late father, Rep. David Gibbs.
Complete but unofficial returns show Gibbs received 57 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s special election over Eddie Longstreet.
House District 36 includes parts of Clay, Lowndes and Monroe counties.
The seat was left vacant by the Jan. 13 death of Democratic Rep. David Gibbs, who had served since 1993.
Candidates in special elections run without party labels.
Karl Gibbs will serve out the current four-year term, which ends in January 2016.
He will be joining the Legislature in the final week of the 2013 session.
