Supervisors reaffirm opposition to drilling near islands

GULF OF MEXICO — Harrison County supervisors approved a resolution that reiterates their opposition to oil and gas drilling in the Mississippi Sound and within 12 miles south of the barrier islands.

The Sun Herald reports the board has passed similar resolutions over the years, and yesterday voted to again oppose the idea. Supervisor Marlin Ladner says the opposition from supervisors and other officials along the Mississippi Coast has been driven by tourism concerns.

The position has been supported by the 12 Miles South Coalition, which is made up of about 35 organizations and businesses that are against oil and gas production within 12 miles of the barrier islands, which are inside Gulf Islands National Seashore.
