Supervisors want massive, multi-facility renovation project

HERNANDO — The DeSoto Board of Supervisors plans a massive facilities overhaul affecting dozens of buildings and offices and costing an estimated $14.4 million.

The Commercial Appeal reports the projects include relocating juvenile justice functions from the crowded courthouse, building a 230-bed expansion at the new jail site, and purchasing buildings for Facilities Management and Emergency Services operations.

A projected timeline places completion of all moves by the end of 2016, with the court-related moves during 2015-16.

Supervisor Bill Russell points to the running of two jails by the county since the opening last fall of the new $16 million, 270-bed lockup just south of Hernando. He said an estimated $950,000 can be shaved from jail staff costs over two years if all the inmates could be shifted into one jail.
