ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — Several Mississippi cities are getting new mayors, after yesterday’s party primaries knocked some incumbents out of contention.
Jackson voters opted for change, as Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. placed third in the Democratic primary. Businessman Jonathan Lee and attorney Chokwe Lumumba advanced to the May 21 runoff
General elections are June 4, and mayors take office July 1.
Five state House members ran in Democratic primaries.
Rep. Kelvin Buck will be the next mayor of Holly Springs.
Rep. Billy Broomfield advanced to the general election in Moss Point.
Rep. Omeria Scott moves to a primary runoff in Laurel.
Vicksburg votes were still being counted this afternoon, to determine if Rep. George Flaggs won the primary or advanced to a runoff.
Rep. Chuck Espy lost the Clarksdale primary to attorney Bill Luckett.
