James Franco discusses "As I Lay Dying" at Cannes festival premier

In a special video interview this week with The Hollywood Reporter, actor James Franco discusses his upcoming film “As I Lay Dying” in conjunction with its world premier at the Cannes Film Festival.

The movie, based on William Faulkner’s dark Southern Gothic novel, was filmed on location in Mississippi.

“I first read it when I was fifteen and it was a book recommended to me by my father,” Franco says. “I’ve loved it for many, many years.”

The story introduces from multiple perspectives the Bundren family including a dying mother Addie, her oldest son Cash who is building her coffin, her husband Anse and other sons Darl and Jewel.

“(As the director) I knew it would be a challenge if I wanted to stay faithful to the spirit of the novel,” Franco said. “Faulkner’s novel was stylistically innovative. Each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective. Underneath they have these inner monologues that are very complex and almost poetic.”

No U.S. release date for the film has been announced.
