Winterville Mounds backers want bigger, more modern museum

WINTERVILLE — Historians, tourism officials and others are pushing to get started on a multimillion-dollar facelift at Winterville Mounds State Park north of Greenville.

They hope to expand the site and transform the museum into a contemporary and interactive history of Native American heritage in the Mississippi Delta.

The Delta Democrat Times reports various organizations met this past week to discuss the area’s future.

The 42-acre park is the site of a prehistoric ceremonial center built by Native Americans more than 1,500 years ago. In 1939, the Greenville Garden Club purchased the Winterville Mounds site and designated it as a state park in the 1960s. In 2000, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History took management.

Officials say it’s time to expand the interpretive capabilities of the museum.
