Stan Little, Southern Airways CEO, said this week that the company will launch flights to and from Destin and Panama City in Florida June 20, and then add flights to and from New Orleans by the end of June.
“The good news is, when seasonal service ends, that gives us the opportunity to bring other routes to Oxford, and we’re looking at a lot of them. We’re studying numbers right now.”
Little said the airline will fly the Cessna 208, which can seat nine people.
Southern Airways officials say flight prices will range from $249 to as low as $18 for the Sunday night red eye starting June 30.
Little said the airline’s current flight network includes Memphis as well as Birmingham and Gulf Shores in Alabama.
Southern Airways’ last flights out of Oxford were 35 years ago.
Little said the feedback the company receives from Oxford flyers will influence the new destinations that are introduced, but the airline is already considering adding cities, such as Atlanta and Nashville, Tenn., as well as daily service to Mississippi cities like Jackson and Gulfport.
Little said the airline also plans special flights for football fans to come into Oxford for games and fly out to games.
Max Hipp, president and CEO of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, said the return of an airline should provide a boost to the local economy.
“It’s a positive thing. We’re very happy, it might lead to some bigger things,” he said. “I think it will not only provide transportation for locals, but it will also get more tourism traffic through those people wanting access to those locations.”
