Another wood pellet operation coming to Pine Belt region

LUCEDALE — A second wood pellet mill is locating in George County.

Officials say the new mill will handle 500,000 tons of pellets per year.

The Mississippi Press reports the Port of Pascagoula leaders signed a document Thursday to provide for shipping of the wood pellets to European utilities, which use the pellets to reduce their carbon emissions.

The name of the company has not been released. The $115 million facility is expected to be operational by early 2015.

According to the port agreement, the plant will create 141 new full-time jobs.

The Port of Pascagoula is already preparing a Bayou Casotte berth for a specialized wood pellet exporting facility. The export facility will cost about $25 million. The state is putting up about $10 million.
