Doctor appeals Medicaid, Medicare fraud conviction

JACKSON — A Mississippi doctor convicted of orchestrating a $6.9-million Medicaid and Medicare fraud scheme will have her appeal heard in July by federal judges in New Orleans.

Oral arguments in the appeal by Dr. Cassandra Faye Thomas will be heard July 10 by a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Thomas was convicted on 10 counts by a federal jury in Jackson in 2011. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison. She filed an appeal with the 5th Circuit.

Prosecutors say Thomas submitted $16 million in claims and was paid about $6.9 million in Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements from 2002 until 2005.

Thomas was convicted of conspiracy, health care fraud, making false statements, theft of public money and wire fraud.
