MDMR removes equipment from boats before sale

BILOXI — The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has removed the electronics from two large fishing vessels that will be sold.

The Sun Herald reports that the equipment removal was discovered when potential buyers took a tour of the two boats Tuesday.

The MDMR is selling a 36-foot Topaz and a 42-foot Californian. They are docked in Biloxi and are worth an estimated $400,000. MDMR received the vessels from a foundation run by the agency’s former director.

The vessels will be open for inspection again tomorrow and the bids will be opened Tuesday at the Commission on Marine Resources meeting.

MDMR spokeswoman Melissa Scallan says the equipment that was removed is beneficial to the agency, such has VHF radios, radar and GPS systems.
