City to auction off 62 tax-forfeited properties

GREENWOOD — Sixty-two parcels of tax-forfeited land in Greenwood, valued at $195,000, will be sold at an auction in September.

Sealed bids must be received by the secretary of state’s office by 5 p.m. Sept. 18. Bids will be opened at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 in Jackson.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann tells the Greenwood Commonwealth that the city and Leflore County will share the proceeds equally.

Hosemann says similar properties have been sold in Greenville, Meridian and McComb. In Greenville, he says more than 100 parcels ultimately generated more than $70,000 for the city and Washington County.

Hosemann says statewide, more than 11,000 properties — with a combined value of more than $50 million — are eligible to be auctioned.

Hosemann says money from the auctions goes to local governments.
