City hopes to land grant to clean up contaminated site

GAUTIER — Petroleum contaminated sites would be prime candidates for a revitalization program if Gautier city officials are successful in obtaining a $400,000 brownfield’s grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Jymalyn Redmond of the Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood firm is assisting the city in preparing its application.

Mayor Gordon Gollott tells The Mississippi Press he hoped to see citizens get involved and help identify brownfield sites. Redmond will be working with Gautier Economic Development and Planning director Chandra Nicholson.

If won, the grant would be used to inventory brownfields, conduct environmental or community-wide site assessments, prepare cleanup and reuse plans, and carry out community and stakeholder outreach. Subsequent grants are available for follow-up job training and cleanup
