PETAL and HATTIESBURG — The city of Petal has filed a lawsuit against the city of Hattiesburg over a sewage rate increase that began last fall.
The suit, filed in Forrest County Chancery Court, claims Hattiesburg has breached its contract with Petal by increasing the rate. The Hattiesburg American reports the suit seeks an injunction to stop Hattiesburg from charging Petal at the higher rate.
Last fall, Hattiesburg began charging Petal at double the rate for city residents, in accordance with Hattiesburg ordinances.
In 2008, the sewage rate for Petal was re-negotiated from 29 cents to 66 cents per thousand gallons of sewage.
Last fall, that rate increased to more than $4 per thousand gallons of sewage.
