City to appeal property values set by county assessor

BILOXI — The city of Biloxi intends to appeal the valuation of dozens of buildings that the county assessor says have no value — and therefore the owners pay no property tax — since Hurricane Katrina.

Community development director Jerry Creel presented the city council yesterday a list of buildings that are appraised by the Harrison County Assessor’s office at zero value and others that have stood empty since Katrina but have an assessed value.

The Sun Herald reports the city has until Monday to file appeals of the assessments. Biloxi attorney David Wheeler said Biloxi can’t recoup any of the money lost since Katrina but can go to the Harrison County Board of Supervisors with the appeals on the 2013 taxes.
