Ex-mayor's lawyer petitions judge for more time in bribery trial

VICKSBURG — An attorney has asked federal judge to reschedule the bribery trial of former Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield.

The trial had been scheduled for Sept. 30, but was recently changed to Sept. 23.

Winfield’s lawyer, Dennis Sweet, said in a court filing Monday that he has another engagement and wants the trial moved back to Sept. 30.

Winfield is charged in U.S. District Court in Jackson with seeking $10,000 in cash in exchange for a city contract. He has pleaded not guilty.

The trial has been rescheduled several times. It was to begin earlier this month, but attorney Terris Harris asked for a delay, saying negotiations were ongoing with prosecutors to resolve the case without a trial. At that time, the judge set the Sept. 30 date. It was later pushed up a week to Sept. 23.

The FBI arrested Winfield on Feb. 20.

Winfield, a Democrat, completed his first term as mayor this year and lost his re-election bid.

If convicted, Winfield could face up to 10 years in prison.
